The History

Shottle Farm Brewery & The Bull Shed are located on a 60 acre working farm in Shottle, a couple of miles north west of the historic industrial town of Belper at the very foot of the pennines.

The Farm belongs to the Chatsworth Estate and has in the past been a much larger farm. We believe primarily with dairy cows.  Some of our fields are medieval and the date on the farmhouse is 1793, which is just 16 years after the USA was founded.

As well as making our own cheese and beer we farm dairy and meat goats, have a small beef herd of Aberdeen Angus X Shorthorn and a couple of pigs.  We have a herd of black cats which we inherited on taking over the Farm for mousing.

The Farm was developed over the years and now has a massive shed more suitable to modern farming, where the animals are housed, which made the old stone buildings a little bit redundant for farming. They now have a new lease of life with The Brewery being located in one of the oldest parts of the barn which was last used as a milking parlour and The Bull Shed is located (the name gives it away a little!) in the old bull shed and the seating area being in the old collecting pen where the cows would wait before going into the milking parlour. The dairy where we make cheese is in the old grain milling room and the pizza oven is in what was a bothy/smithy.

Today The Bull Shed retains much of its original features with exposed stone walls, its sloping concrete floor with the cocks foot prints in it and massive steel beams holding up the grain floor, the beams we think may have come from the old Belper West Mill.

We built an open fire which all adds to the character and the relaxing, country feel of The Bull Shed.  It can still get nippy in The Bull Shed so we advise layers, especially in the winter.

We are surrounded by spectacular country walks making it an ideal place to meet up and rest those tired legs whist taking in a bit of the country atmosphere. Well behaved Children/Dogs and muddy boots alike are always welcome.

With a variety of home cooked food and real ale on offer we're sure we have something to suit everyone's taste. We have tables from 2 to 8 people so catering for small groups up to 8  is no problem. For more than 8 if you want a table together we have to do some reorganising in both staff and furniture so we add a 10% service charge on to your bill.

We can also do private parties and farmhouse dining in The Bull Shed.

Our aim is to make sure all who visit leave with great memories of this old bull shed, Handley Farm and the Grumpy Farmer.
